FAIR, fairness and accuracy in reporting, is a national media watch group. The organization has been offering well-documented criticism of media bias and censorship since 1986. FAIR works to invigorate the First Amendment by advocating for greater diversity in the press and by scrutinizing media practices that marginalize public interest, minority and dissenting viewpoints. The anti-censorship organization provides useful information for everyday news consumers on avoiding fake and bias news.

The How to Detect Bia in News Media article by FAIR is a helpful one I believe all news consumers should give a read. The article encourages the reader to use constructive skepticism, a tool I live by, to decide whether a source is being objective and neutral. The article discusses how to act on biased reporting as well, such as calling the publication, which is a thing not many people would know to do. FAIR provides their own stories, from breaking news to opinion, so you can read knowing the author is speaking form a neutral place. The organization also has a podcast, Counterspin, and a newsletter.

In addition to calling out poor news outlets, FAIR acknowledges the good ones. FAIR provides a seemingly unlimited amount of information for readers. I encourage my Mismedia audience to take a look at their website and read some of the information they provide. This will give you a distinct and well-rounded perspective on bias, misinformation, and disinformation in media.
