A Fight for Nonpartisan & Neutral Reporting

Is this the real news, or is this just a fantasy?

The era of “fake news” is upon us, making it increasingly difficult to dictate how reliable a piece of information is. Drawing independent decisions becomes a challenge as our news resources turn to biased information in order to promote political agendas.

As of 2017, 68% of people get their news from social media (Gottfried & Shearer, 2017). With the popularity of social media, incorrect information has the ability to become viral. Without knowing how to differentiate bias from neutral reports, one is left to make impactful decisions on false pretenses. In order for democracy to proceed as it is intended, the participation of citizens must be drawn from personal values and desires. Incorrect or misleading information has the power to drive people without any factual evidence.

Social media is a platform for free speech and regulating it can be interpreted as a violation of rights. We are left with one solution: if we cannot regulate biased news or incorrect information, then individuals must be able to regulate it themselves.
